" this practice (making and using well-made things) teaches us simply to honor care taken; it also teaches us to be a good deal less content with the shabby, the hasty, the thoughtless, the narrow and the glib. Our learning to honor the serious labor that goes into a well-made artifact might--if we make the expansive connection--teach us to honor the serious labor involved in shaping a well-made life."
Scott Cairns
Realizing that making is as indigenous to humans as growing wool is to sheep, Charlotte Mason advocates the tried and true "plan of bringing children up on Books and Things." With afternoons reserved for art and craft, nature and field study, personality is embodied and the shelves of our wee shop fill irresistibly with the daily work of our hands.
We've called our shop Out-of-Hand and the pun's intended--there is so much more than education at stake. It is prov.en.der's hope that each small classroom and outcropping of Mason inspired people will take up their handiwork intentionally, as a revolutionary call to preserve and update a fine heritage of well-made artifacts in the current culture. Let's create a handcrafted ruckus as a sign and symbol of well-made lives.
It is our grand pleasure to display these mercurial offerings; they range from the whimsical to the serious but are always deep-hearted and carefully fashioned by members of the prov.en.der community.
